Early October in the Art Room

Early October in the Art Room
from Mrs. Klatt
Dear Parents

We are getting messy in the art room and having a lot of fun with color and fall themed projects. The younger grades move a bit faster with their work than the older more detailed oriented students but we are all working very hard and creating amazing art. Check out your students Artsonia Portfolio and leave a comment - they love to read parent and grandparent comments about their work.

Kindergarten completed their Paul Klee self-portraits and then moved on to learning about primary colors with a Piet Mondrian printmaking activity. Currently, they are learning about lines and secondary colors and are in the middle of creating glittery Midnight Pumpkins for the fall season.

1st grade worked very hard on their Royal Self Portraits and revisited rainbow color order (ROYGBIV) to complete their backgrounds. They are currently working on line and reviewing primary and secondary colors by creating Line Monsters inspired by the picture book Lines That Wiggle by Candace Whitman.

2nd Grade finished their Romero Britto self portraits - they turned out amazing. They are currently starting a project exploring positive and negative space and symmetry by creating a paper-cut jack-o-lantern from construction paper. This is a tricky project but already one student is hoping that his turns out well so he can put it in the art show!

3rd Grade  completed their fun Pop Art Self Portraits and are beginning their Alebrije project. The learned about Pedro Linares who created the first alebrije from a nightmare. This has morphed into the colorful and whimsical Mexican Folk Art we know of today. This is a fun and multi-step 3D project so third grade will be coming in for extra art time in art studio this month.

4th Grade  completed their colorful abstract self portraits and are now moving on to learning about Pueblo Storytellers which were first created by Helen Cordero a Cochiti Pueblo Potter.  They will be creating a storyteller out of red clay and adding special features: an open mouth that sings out the story and children to listen to the story. They will color the storytellers with details in flat black and white underglaze.

5th Grade are almost finished with their fabulous black and white pencil portraits. Once completed students will learn about a variety of coil techniques with clay. They will use these techniques to create a tree or flower plaque that has a unique blend of black underglaze and colored glaze.

Junior High - are mostly finished with their Chuck Close self portraits and assemblage self portraits.  Once the majority of the class completes a project the student will need to come to art club or take projects home to complete them before trimester ends. We are starting a new Ansel Adams project exploring composition and contrast in black and white photography. In the coming weeks your student will need to take several landscape photographs at home on their iPads to bring into class to edit and discuss.

Art Room Items Needed & A Few Wish List Items:
  • Beanie Babies: For 3rd grade we need beanie babies or beanie baby sized stuffed or plasic animals that can be mummified as the armature for our Alebrije project. These will not be returned since they will become a work of art.
  • Play-Doh:  it is an excellent tool to practice clay techniques before we use the actual clay but it is also a very popular free choice activity and gets used up quickly through the year.
  • Kitchen Sponges
  • Yogurt/Deli-Containers with lids
  • Lysol Disinfectant Spray
  • Method / Seventh Generation Antibacterial Spray Cleaner
  • Random small toys/prizes that are destined for Goodwill (for example McDonald's toys) to supplement the Magic Box (art room prize box). I can always use school safe candy as I go through a ton of candy during art parties and art club.
National Junior Art Honor Society:
We are in the submission stage for our students who have joined. The group met last Friday to pick officers and we are finalizing those details which I will share soon. I am very excited to begin our chapter as are the students.
