Read and fill in the guided notes for lesson 4.3 Mutations

Today you will complete the notes for 4.1 The Genetic Code. Please read the small amount of narrative (explanation) I included with the notes, it should help you with comprehension.

Please take this extended weekend to make up any missing work in my class. Contact me if you need any help.

Take a look at the cool origami DNA molecule I made. Not only is it a really good scientific model, but it is rather attractive and quite impressive. I will hold an optional Zoom call at 1:00 pm for anyone who would like me to show them how to make the model. You will need to print the template and trim the excess paper off (doesn't have to be in color). OK - we are moving on to the next chapter. Read 4.1 The Genetic Code and answer the questions in the text. Then take the quiz to show me you have done the reading.

Don't ask me why Figure 1 does not ask you to number between 1-4 -- they ask you to number 2-5 and I have no idea....

Today you will read lesson 3.4 Chromosomes and Inheritance BUT I want you to skip the section on Meiosis, pages 96-97 (of course you can do it if you want). I have decided not to cover cellular division because of e-learning challenges. Maybe we can touch upon it next year.

You may have noticed that I changed up today (Fri) assignment from the original plan. I am having second thoughts on how to proceed with Lesson 3.4 Chromosomes and Inheritance and need some time to think about that......

So have fun today with Minion genetics -- it's easy and a good way to make sure you know your vocabulary. Don't forget to include a picture of your minion........

I found a video that I thought helped demonstrate some of the concepts we are talking about. Please watch it first (no questions, but I can monitor how much of the video you watch)

I put together a couple questions on codominance and incomplete dominance -- sorry if you have formatting issues with the punnett squares I drew (it is probably best that you do not try to type in the punnett squares and use Notability or print up the sheets)

Complete the student guided notes for lesson 3.2 Probability and Heredity. They are super easy, so I added a few comprehension questions at the end (don't skip them, there is a chance for extra credit)

Our next lesson, 3.3 Patterns of Inheritance starts to talk about more complex ways traits are inherited. I will be summarizing these for you in Thursday's Zoom call. It would REALLY benefit you to attend.

We will be filling in the attached form during the call (you can either print it, use Notability or just make your own notes -- it is a simple form)

Today you will read lesson 3.2 Probability and Heredity and take the Google Quiz to show me that you read the lesson.

I also have a link to an on-line dice rolling game called Play Pig. It is all about probability AND your risk tolerance. I made a short video explaining how to play (thank you to Ms. Rossetti for introducing me to this technology). Send me a screen shot if you beat the computer!

Hopefully the game works on your iPad (it did on mine), have fun with it as you consider the probability of your next roll.....

Today you will be watching a Bill Nye video on probability. In order to get credit for the assignment, you need to watch the entire video (I can see if you did this through EdPuzzle). I did not embed any questions since the video is longer.

This assignment will remind you of the dog DNA --- though this time you will create a "creature" and you will choose your alleles based on a coin toss.

Read the directions carefully and you should be able to figure out what to do. After you coded and draw your creature, make sure to complete the analysis. Note: Gene Type = Genotype

Please finish the More Fun with Punnett Squares if you haven't done so already (if you're done -- yahoo! no additional work for you today)

Also -- I would like you to fill out the Heredity/Genetics vocabulary sheet; look up the definitions in your workbook (some might be in future lessons). It is important that you understand the meaning of these words; so we might do numerous definition activities/lessons. Don't forget to share with me when you are done.

Welcome back to "school" -- I hope you enjoyed your break.

We are going to ease our way back into the study of heredity by doing a little science heredity art project about how different traits are inherited and how DNA codes for these traits (this is the "dog picture" Anne has so been waiting for all year...) I had to modify the assignment to fit e-learning, so we will not be able to use the DNA picture code sequences that you will see on some of the documentation (just ignore it....)

IMPORTANT HELP: I will have a Zoom call scheduled for 11:00 am today (Mon.) to go over the requirements.

STEP 1. For this assignment, you are given a code for you dog's DNA sequence. Each of you has an individual code listed in the attached spreadsheet. The code will be 8 letters longs and the only letters are A, B, C, and D. Each letter is associated with a specific trait your dog has -- these are listed at the top of the spreadsheet: body shape, head shape, ears.....Write these 8 traits and the letter you have for that trait on a sheet of paper so you can reference them.

STEP 2. In the Kami Export - Traits-Recipe PDF document, you will see the 8 traits listed with the four choices for that trait. You will use your eight letters to determine which trait you will draw for your dog. If you have an "A" listed for a trait, it would be the first choice listed; "B" would be the 2nd choice and so on.....

For instance: Head shape can be 1.) long, thin 2.) flat 3) short 4) droopy. Look at the letter code you got from the spreadsheet for body shape, say you had a "C" listed for body shape - that would be the 3rd choice or "short" head shape. You would draw your dog with a short head shape.

You will do this for all 8 dog traits, determining your dog's unique characteristics.

STEP 3. You will then draw your dog on a piece of 81/2" X 11" using the traits and share your drawing with me. I will figure out a way to share them with the class

Today (Thurs) you will write 5 questions you had about lesson 3.1 What is Heredity. See the document for further instructions. This is not optional -- even if you understand, I bet you can come up with some higher order or advanced questions (I heard A LOT of those during our Zoom chat -- loved it!!)

Good Monday Morning! Hopefully you have turned in the Chapter 1 test (the Review & Reinforce assignment) - it was due at 8:15 am

We are moving on in our workbooks, BUT we are going to skip Chapter 2 and go right to studying genetics, Chapter 3 Genetics: The Study of Heredity.

You will start out by taking an inventory of some of your characteristics and recording your data. The document called Inventory of Traits is where you will start; answer the questions for your traits. If you are confused, the second document Traits-Trivia shows pictures of the traits you are looking at. Finally, you will record your results in the Google Sheets so we will have all of 7th grade results in one document. YOU MUST RECORD YOUR DATA ON OUR CLASS SHEET BY TUES 8:15 AM because your assignment on Tues will involve graphing the class data.

You will then watch a short video that is a good introduction to genetics. It is in EdPuzzle -- so you will be answering the questions as you go along. The video is posted in a separate assignment.

Today you are being presented with a digital breakout activity. We did one of these in class earlier this year, so hopefully you remember how it goes. The attached PDF has the QR code to access the breakout room. It's important that you read the directions so you know what you are doing.

Your assessment (test) is going to be completing all of the Review & Reinforce assignments for the Chapter (4 of them). I know, normally you do these as your study guide and I give you answers to check; but since this is no longer normal times for us, I've switched things around.

You can use your book to help you (consider this open book). You just need to type or neatly write the answers in a document and share them with me. Since you can use your book, I expect that you all will do very well.

You have until Monday morning at 8:15 am to submit this to me.

Today you will be exploring the concept of diffusion by completing a web interactive activity called Molecular Workbench Diffusion. The link is below; make sure to start on question #1. The simulation is linked to my account, don't worry about my name being on it. Let me know if the session has timed out, I will try and fix that. It does require you to read and follow the directions carefully, and answer questions as you go along. Play around with the variables on each interactive to get a good sense of how things work.

After you complete question #10, push the button at the bottom of the screen that says "Generate Report". When you get the report, click on the button that says "Share" ; copy and paste that link into the Google Doc so I can get a copy of your report.

I will not grade on accuracy IF I sense that you really tried - I will note this by the quality of your answers.

So ------ my lucky 7W students -- my mistake, I posted the assignment for 7R and not you guys. I hope you enjoyed your day off.

Today (Fri) you will be filling in your own guided notes for lesson 1.3 Chemical Compounds in Cells. I have shared with you a copy of the notes; you will use your workbook to fill in the missing information. It is my expectation that you type your answers directly into the document and submit that back to me. If you have a different way of doing this, go for it -- as long as you get the notes done.....

Remember, my notes follow the book very closely. I've included color-coding for the headings and vocabulary (it matches the colors in the workbook) and I have indicated when you should write something and when you should just read the entry. I know you already did vocabulary definitions for the words, I'm asking that you rewrite them in your guided notes (the more practice you have the better).

You might have some issues with the formatting of the document, but you are a smart group of students and should be able to figure that out.

Today you will make vocabulary cards for the following words (most, but not all are highlighted in your workbook). Your choice, either on notecards/paper or in Quizlet. I made my own notecards, and to be honest with you some of the definitions are a bit tricky. So when you are done making your notecards, you will take an ungraded, but mandatory quiz. You can check your definitions with mine as you take the quiz, and make any changes to yours if they don’t match mine.

I'm attaching two diagrams for you to label the organelles. The first is a Google slide of an animal cell. There is a word bank and you can type directly on the slide before submitting to me. #10 should be filled in as centrosome already (you do not need to know that organelle).

The second diagram is of PDF of a plant cell which you will have to import into Notability so you can type or NEATLY write the organelles in the appropriate boxes. I've included a word bank document for the plant cell -- there is one term we do not use, perioxisome (it is related to the lysosome) -- this is the small, perfectly round hollow structure.

So we survived our first day of E-Learning. Thank you to all of you who sent or shared with me your scores from the Cell Explorer app. If you haven't done so already, please submit those to me so you will get credit for the assignment.

Your next assignment is to watch the attached video on cell structures. I am using a new resource called Edpuzzle; it is tool that allows me to embed (include) questions into a video that students must answer in order to continue watching the video. When the video stops, answer the question, submit it and then press continue to go on. You will notice that you have an option to review the video segment again before answering the question (I suggest you use this option); you are being graded on your answers to the questions so please pay attention. If the question is multiple choice (most are) you will find out right away how you did; short answer questions will be graded by me when I review your scores. You cannot go back and correct or redo your answers once they are submitted so make sure you are confident with your answer before submitting.

You are my beta test group for this new resource (meaning you are the first grade to use it). Please give me your honest feedback (but do so in a respectful manner, please).

I know we played this app last week, but most of you didn't finish. I am asking that you play the whole game again and complete all 4 missions.
