Director of Student Services

I came to Sacred Heart School five years ago after retiring as an Assistant Director of Special Education, Principal, and School District Consultant, as well as being an Adjunct Professor. My 27 year public school career included teaching and consulting for students and teachers.   I have been a consultant and peer monitor for the Illinois State Board of Education and a member of the team from Pearson to author and design the new qualifying exams for future educator licensing.   My bachelors' degree was from the University of Illinois in Medieval Literature and Speech Theater.  I received my Masters Degree and Continuing Area of Specialization from National Louis University.  In 1999, I was awarded my doctorate from the Fischler Institute of Education, Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Teaching has always been my love and passion. I believe that through creativity and strategies based teaching all students can grow.    More importantly, it is my passion and drive to make certain that each student reaches their greatest potential and grows academically, socially and emotionally. 
Sacred Heart School has talented educators who support the needs of all children. If you have a concern about your child academically, socially, or in the area of speech language, please do not hesitate to talk to your child's classroom teacher. Our goal is to support all learners and also challenge them for academic excellence. The classroom teacher will consult with our team, if necessary; and then, a meeting would be set up to address these issues.  
If you choose to have your child privately tested, please let your child's teacher know as well as myself. This helps to keep the paper work safe.  If  your provider wants "scales" completed please contact me at extension 224 or by email: mcanel@shwschool.org.  The purpose of this procedure is to keep your child's privacy protected and have the forms distributed and collected by me and timely manner.
