8W Science Assignments

Happy Monday 8th Grade!

For the next 2 days, you are asked to come up with a vocabulary list of science terms from A to Z (one word for each letter). Put some thought into all the science you have learned over the last three years, you will be amazed at how much you know (I know I am).

This is not optional, so please complete the list by Tues. at 6:00 pm so I have time to compare the lists and determine the winner.

I will announce that person during our Zoom call on Wed.

Winner will earn 10 extra credit points and their name on the Science Wall of Fame (as soon as I make one!!

We are jumping to Chapter 8, the Endocrine System, which is all about your hormones and human reproduction.

Today you will complete the student guided notes for lesson 8.1 The Endocrine System and watch the video. I know the video is rather silly, but I do think it presents the information in an easy to understand format.

FRIDAY we will be going over the human reproductive systems. I've decided to hold a live zoom class in order for us to take notes together. I am going to separate the boys and the girls so it will be more comfortable (especially for Maggie). Girls are at 10:00 am and Boys are at 12:30.

Here are the student guided notes for 4.3 Composition of Blood. They are fairly lengthy, so I'm extending the due date to Thurs. morning.

I realize that the blood typing may be a bit confusing, I'm working on a way to better show you how this works. Ask your parents if they know your blood type, and if they don't ask them if they know their own because we can talk about the probability of your blood type if we know your parents.

I'm going to be speeding up the lessons in this chapter because I just realized we only have a couple weeks left of school and I need to get in the chapter on the endocrine system (that's the human reproduction one that we all have been looking forward to).

So, I'm skipping the reading quiz and having you fill out the student guided notes for lesson 4.2 A Closer Look at Blood Vessels. It's up to you if you fill in the text as you read (I guess it has been up to you all along since I can't really check).

Today you will watch a Bill Nye video on skin and answer a set of questions regarding the video (22 min). It is an entertaining video that I think you will enjoy. I suggest you take a look at the questions before you watch so you are prepared when an answer comes up in the video (they are not hard questions).

Use the QR code to access the video -- I'm assuming you won't have any issues, the video is being played non SchoolTube so it should not be blocked.

I couldn't come up with a fun Jeopardy game for the major muscle groups (there just isn't that much information to fill out the board). So no Zoom call today.

I would like you to learn a few of the major muscle groups. This will benefit the athletes in our group; as you continue working out you will target the development and strengthening of certain muscles depending on your sport. How cool would it be if you knew the scientific names (at least I think it would be)

You have one document that includes labels, and another that just has a word bank. I do not expect you to be able to spell these muscles -- some of the names are really weird....

I am planning a Zoom call for Wed so we can have a friendly competition to see who knows there muscles.....

Read the Muscular System Tour and use that information to answer the questions.

2.2 Student Guided Notes The Muscular System

Today you will be applying your graphing and data interpretation skills. I have provided you with some data on the # of bones in various locations in the body. Basically, you will make a bar graph of the data and use the bar graph to interpret a pie chart (more details are on the document).

You will be turning in one bar graph and the circle graph answer key (A thru K). I provided you with graph sheet that you can either print and hand draw your graph, or transfer it to Notability and complete it that way. You can also use your own graph paper if you have some at home. Remember, a good graph has all appropriate labels, straight edges, uniform increments and nice colors (if possible) and don't forget -- factually accurate!

Welcome back to "school" -- I hope you all enjoyed your break.

We are going to continue to work on memorizing the major bones of the skeletal system. Today you will be reviewing those bones by playing the PurposeGames quiz and reviewing the skeletal diagrams. You will not need to turn anything in today; but you will need to prepare for our live Jeopardy game. I would suggest you study for at least 20 minutes.

I am asking that all of you join me on Tues. at 12:00 pm for a Zoom call, and we will play a game of Jeopardy where each of you will be answering questions about your bones, so please come prepared.

Disappointingly, no one attempted to do this digital escape room.

Well -- now you must attempt it -- no longer for extra credit. You will spend 20 minutes on this, and if you don't escape by the end of the 20 minutes, take a screen shot of what level you ended up on and share it with me (it better not be the first level).

Complete the student guided notes

Today you are going to start learning about the different bones in your body.

But first, I'm presenting you with a fun challenge to see who can identify the most animal skeletons. Share with me your answers, and I will announce the winner on Wed and they will get a virtual piece of candy :)

The second document contains a labelled skeleton for you to start studying. These are the main bones that I would like you to learn. I've included an unlabelled skeleton as well for you to practice (maybe print it??)

When you are ready to test your memory -- go to the "Label the Skeleton - PurposeGames" site. Press the arrow to start the game -- it will list a bone at the top of the screen, you need to press the correct blue dot that is pointing to that bone. Play the game as many times as needed for you to be proficient in labeling bones. Share with me your best score and ranking (my best ranking is 487th overall, not sure what that means?....)

FYI:
If you get it correct on the first try, the blue dot turns green.
If you get it correct on the second try, the blue dot turns yellow
If you get it incorrect, the game shows you what the name of the bone you chose and allows you to try again.
You get 3 tries before the game will tell you the correct answer (by displaying a pink dot).
You need to touch the pink dot to go on to the next bone

10 extra credit points if you break out. Share a screen shot of the last 'page' with me so I know you were successful.

Now that we are done with system interactions, we are going to start and look more closely at individual systems.

The first system we will look at is the skeletal system. As a fun introduction I have an activity I would like you to complete that looks at how different body part measurements are related. You are going to record different measurements of your body parts on the spreadsheet and then you will answer the questions in the Body Ratio and Proportion Document (this document also has some instructions on how to take the measurements if you are confused).

Ideally we would make all our measurements using the metric system, but since we are not together and I don't know what rulers you have at home I think its best we use INCHES for all our measurements. If you don't have a ruler at home (really, who doesn't have a ruler??) -- there are on-line rulers you can use. You might need to use a string to get the distance of the body part you are measuring then use the on-line ruler (or at home ruler) to measure how long the string is and thus the measurement of your body part.

So, here is your Chapter 1 test.... Complete the Review & Reinforce sheet for all three lessons. Share with me a document that has your answers.

For question 1 on the 1.3 Homeostasis R&R -- you will have fours "steps" . The first "step" is "Warm environment causes body temperature to rise". You need to say three more "steps" -- that is, three more things that your body will do to maintain homeostasis when you get warm. Refer to Figure 3 on page 14 for clarification.

You have 2 days to complete this (boy I am such a generous teacher).

Here is a little challenge for you. See how long you can stand on one foot and continue to maintain your balance. Remember from the reading, your balance actually has to do with structures in your ears. If you can stand on one foot for more than 3 minutes, I would be impressed. Next try standing on one foot and picking up an item from the floor; not so easy is it? As your head moves, the structures in your ears are sending information to other parts of your body instructing them to help you maintain balance; this doesn't alway work out too well -- did you fall over? Share comments with the class on your experience....

Today, you will be completing the Student Guided Notes for 1.3 Homeostasis. Don't forget to share them with me when you are done.

When you are done, read lesson 1.3 Homeostasis and answer the questions in the text. Then take the Google quiz so I can see if you paid attention to what you just read.

Todays assignment sounds a bit ominous.....

It's really not, instruction are in the document -- you will be using an interactive human body to answer some questions.

Today you will read lesson 1.2 System Interactions and answer the questions in the text. No need to send me pictures of your work. You will show me that you read the lesson by successfully completing the Google form quiz.

Today you have two tasks to complete:

1. An activity on muscle tissue
2. Student guided notes for 1.1 Human Body System

The instruction for the muscle tissue activity are in the attached document. Record your results in the shared Google Spreadsheet.

I miss being with you all to do our guided notes, however the lessons must go on; you will have to fill in your own guided notes. I have given each of you a copy of the guided notes. You will use your workbook to fill in the missing information. I'm sorry if you run into some formatting issues (but you are all smart enough to deal with it). Remember, the notes follow the lesson very closely and summarize the content. I am very specific as to what you are to write down and it is all in your workbook.

We are moving on to our new book, Human Body Systems. Perhaps you take a "book walk" to see what we will be covering in this unit. I might not go in order and we probably won't make it through all the chapters (yes, we are required to cover chapter 8, but we'll get to that toward the end of the trimester).

You'll start by watching an introductory video on a new platform I found called EdPuzzle. The video is entitled "The Human Body Systems Functions Overview" (8.5 minutes). As you watch, the video will pause and present you with questions that I've created; you need to answer the questions before moving on. You have the option to back-up and review the video in order to make sure you answer the questions correctly. Your answers are sent to me and this will be graded so take your time and do a thorough job.

After watching the video, you will read 1.1 Body Organization and answer the questions in the text.

**Note the actual # and name of the body systems will vary depending on the resource

So as you know we often take a day of rest after our tests and read Science World magazine and play Jeopardy. Given our e-learning days, I'm modifying that the best I can. You will still read the on-line version of the magazine (link is below) --for at least 15 minutes of your time. Since we can't play Jeopardy together, I've copied the questions into a Google form which you will answer and submit to me. You can refer back to the magazine and you don't have a time limit, therefor, I expect that you can get all the questions correct. You are being graded.

Here are the Review & Reinforce documents for the three lessons in Chapter 5 Chemical Reactions. I will be using these as your assessment for this chapter (your test). It is an open book test, please use your workbook to answer the questions. I have shared with you a google document for you to type up your answers and submit them to me (answers only, no need to rewrite the questions). If you have a different/preferred way to submit your answers I'm flexible (hand writing and scanning to an email -- or importing documents to Notability to complete and then share with me.....). You have two days to finish this -- it's due Thurs., Mar 19 at 6pm

Here is the list for the upcoming binder check. You will not be given class time to organize your binder. Binder check will be sometime during the week of October 21; I will not be announcing the exact date, so be prepared.

You will be designing a cage to protect your raw egg from damage when it falls. The following article will help you understand the physics principles (laws etc.) that should help you design the best protective cage possible. You will be answering some questions about the physics of the egg drop before you can build your cage (this will be in a separate classroom assignment)

I was just reviewing this, and you might get confused. I mentioned in class to only do the graph of time vs. distance -- you do not have to do the map (that would show cardinal directions (north, south.....) so that takes question 5 out as well. So no question 4 and 5
